Saudi Arabia opened its first co-education university. Shah Abdullah inaugurated the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). Jordan’s King Abdullah II, Yemen’s President Ali Abdullah Saleh, Turkish President Abdullah Gull, Sudanese President Omer Al-Bashir, Syria's Bashar al-Assad, Western officials and Nobel laureates participated in the opening ceremony of the university. The university situated in north of Jeddah will spearhead reforms in the Islamic state. The KAUST has attracted more than 70 professors and 800 students from abroad. Proponents of Shah Abdullah’s reforms say the university will reduce dependence of oil-rich country on other countries in science and technology sectors. The university has more than 70 green spaces, gyms, clinics and spacious residential districts.
