Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry will shortly receive details, and some startling revelations, on the billions stolen from the national exchequer by a Customs gang that continues to operate and manage a mega smuggling racket exploiting the ISAF duty-tax free facility, writes Ikram Hoti.
The CJ, after taking a suo motu notice of media reports, had assigned Federal Ombudsman Dr Shoaib Suddle to investigate the matter and report to the apex court.
According to informed sources privy to the exhaustive investigative report, it has detailed the entire working and methodology of the involved gang and also the cover-up attempts taking place after the SC intervention. The gang had manufactured thousands of Goods Declarations (GDs) showing that hundreds of consignment containers (Customs Intelligence claimed the real number runs into thousands) had been imported by ISAF (which in reality they weren’t and had actually been brought in by the smuggling racket) and these containers were declared duty and tax free and then shown to have crossed over to Afghanistan.
