As the NRO remains the most hot-button issue in the country – waiting to be tested and tossed in or out of the parliament, the former president and its architect says it was meant to provide only Benazir a comeback parachute.

Gen (R) Pervez Musharraf told a gathering New York nonday that he had promulgated the infamous Presidential Ordnance titled “National Reconciliation Ordinance” (NRO) for Benazir Bhutto and not for Asif Ali Zardari.

With the assassination of Benazir, Zardari, by accident, became one of the biggest beneficiaries of the plea bargain aka NRO resulting in his subsequent comeback, ending up having re-access to millions of dollars which were seized, sealed or forzen inside and overseas.

He clarified that the NRO was only for Benazir Bhutto, so that she could come back to Pakistan, adding, “ Not he , but parliament elected Zardari as president”.

“The country has reached near destruction, he said, “but I am not responsible for it”, he maintained.

According to him, the dollar was Rs.60 during his time but now it had climbed to Rs.83 and power production during his term was 18,000MW and demand was less, alleging that the rulers were not making payment to the private power companies, due to which production has fallen.
