US stands with Pakistan in ‘difficult time’: State Dept

The United States stands with Pakistan as it plays its part in the “common fight” against terrorism, the State Department said on Thursday. “This is a remarkably difficult time for Pakistan. They’re dealing with brutal terrorists and indigenous insurgents.

We’ve seen over the last couple of weeks, in the run-up to and during the operation in North and South Waziristan an increase in brutal bombings and targeted assassinations,” spokesman Ian Kelly said. The US and Pakistan have a common fight against extremists, he said.

“We recognise that this is a very difficult time for Pakistan, but we also recognise that the fight that they’re involved in right now is very much a common fight, this fight against retrograde extremists who want to take their country back into the dark ages.” “And US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton went to Pakistan to show that we stand with those in Pakistan who are fighting this fight.

This is a fight that we’re also fighting,” the Sate Department spokesman added.
