At least seven persons including three policemen, three detainees and a passerby were injured when a bomb blast ripped through a police post near Chowk Kumharanwala on Sunday, police said.
The initial investigations revealed that the bomb was planted on a motorbike parked inside the maal khana of Gaddafi police post. It suddenly went off, causing partial damage to the post, besides shattering windowpanes of the adjoining buildings.
About eight kilogram explosive material was used in the blast.
The injured were identified as constables Qaisar Abbas, Khadim Hussain and Saiful Shahzad; detainees Danish, Asghar and Nasir and a passerby Khalid. The injured were rushed to Nishtar Hospital where the condition of two cops is stated to be precarious.
An earlier statement issued by the police department said the bomb was planted on a motorbike parked along the outer wall of the police post but the initial investigation by bomb disposal squad rejected the claim, saying the bomb went off inside the post and not outside. A hoax was also doing the round in the town regarding attack of the terrorists’ accomplices on the post.
“The bomb was inside the post and not outside,” said District Officer Civil Defence Shahid Pervez while talking to journalists. Punjab Minister for Auqaf Haji Ehsan Uddin Qureshi said due to strict security arrangements the scale of destruction was not very high.
DCO Zahid Akhtar Zaman, CPO Amir Zulfiqar and other high-ranking officials rushed to the blast site and supervised rescue operation.
Agencies add: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani condemned the attack, an official statement said. He visited hospital and enquired after the health of the injured.
