Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif said on Monday that if needed he would establish military courts in Karachi if he came to power as he had done during his previous tenure.

Talking to the media at the airport here, he said kidnapping for ransom and robberies were rampant in Sindh and had made the lives of the masses miserable. Nawaz said during his government, he had taken several steps to improve the law and order situation in Sindh.

He said he was in favour of restoring the old status of Bahawalpur and also in favour of the formation of small provinces. “However, the PML-N opposes new provinces on the basis of language,” he added.

The PML-N chief said if the rulers wanted to see democracy flourishing, they should announce elections as early as possible. Sharif said he was not aware who was interested in a proposed meeting between him and President Asif Ali Zardari, adding he was not visiting Karachi on the advice of President Zardari.

Delivering a speech after the elections of the PML-N local leadership held here at a local hotel, Nawaz said had the PPP government implemented the Charter of Democracy (COD), the country would never have faced such economic devastation and poverty.

Ghous Ali Shah was elected the Sindh chapter president of the PML-N, while Saleem Zia was voted in as general secretary of the party. Nawaz Sharif said the PPP government should respect and implement the COD because it was signed by Benazir Bhutto. He said the economy was on the verge of collapse as foreign businessmen never wanted to make investments in Pakistan. “Foreign investors want to hold business talks in Dubai. The flight of capital is taking place and it should be stopped now,” he added. He said loadshedding had destroyed the economy and industries were being shut down, adding if he came to power, he would eliminate loadshedding. Nawaz Sharif said he had planned to build a Motorway form Karachi to Balochsitan, but his government was ousted. “I had a plan to run a high speed train from Karachi to Torkham with stops in Hyderabad, Multan, Peshawar, Lahore and Rawalpindi, but this plan could not be materialised because my government was toppled.” The PML-N chief said he had made great achievements in the field of defence and the atomic explosions were one of them. He said the Daanish school system would also be introduced in Sindh as this system launched by Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif had proved successful in Punjab.

He said the holding of elections within the party was real democracy. He said he hoped that his party would win more seats from Sindh in the next general elections as the PML-N was now better organised in Sindh.
