President Asif Ali Zardari on Monday turned down the offer of Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Babar Awan to tender resignation from his office, in order to face inquiry of National Accountability Bureau against him.

In a meeting held at Presidency, the President did not accept Babar Awan’s offer, saying that a mere inquiry was not a strong reason to resign from the cabinet. President Zardari directed him to continue working as a minister in the federal cabinet.

The main culprit of Punjab Bank loan scandal Sheikh Afzal had given a statement in Supreme Court that Federal Minister Babar Awan, Sharif ud Din Pirzada, his friend Sarfraz Merchant and Ali Hassan son of Wasim Sajjad had received millions of rupees from him as case fee and for abolition of the case. The NAB has summoned the minister for parliamentary affairs Dr Babar Awan, Sharif ud Din Pirzada and former attorney general Malik Abdul Qayyum after the statement.
