Chairman of Awami Muslim League Sheikh Rasheed has said that whether the culprits of this murder attempt are caught or not, I will still not withdraw from the elections. He also said that he can get murdered before the elections. Talking to media after being discharged from the hospital, Sheikh Rasheed said that after Mansehra, Nawaz Sharif can not tolerate defeat in Rawalpindi also and he added that CCPO Rawalpindi works for Chaudhry Nisar. While on the other side PML-N’s representative for National Assembly Hanif Abbasi talked exclusively to Dunya News stating that Sheikh Rasheed is suffering from Chaudhry Nisar phobia; however he should not politicize upon his companion’s dead bodies.
Sheikh Rasheed who is also a candidate of NA-55 for the by-elections, was present in his election office at Kahyaban-e-Sir Syed, Rawalpindi at 6 p.m. when 2 motorcyclists opened fire at his office, due to which Sheikh Rasheed’s bodyguards Javed, Arshad and PA Anwar were killed instantly.
According to sources, Sheikh Rasheed got an injury on his knee as he fell down on the ground. He was shifted to District Headquarter Hospital for medical treatment, and was later released after being given the first aid. The eyewitnesses told that there were 5 to 6 gunmen who easily managed their escape after this incident. Heavy police contingent later cordoned off the area. While the activists and workers of Awami Muslim League protested outside the election office. After the release of Sheikh Rasheed’s statement, Pirwidhai police registered a case against unidentified persons; where as CCPO Rawalpindi told that this visit of Sheikh Rasheed to his election office was not scheduled and police was not even informed about it earlier.
President Zardari and Prime Minister Gilani condemned the attack on Sheikh Rasheed and have ordered for tougher security measures to be arranged for the candidates during the upcoming by-elections. Interior Minister Rehman Malik has also ordered the report of the attack. PML-N leader Mian Nawaz Sahrif, MQM leader Altaf Hussain, Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman, Asfandyar Wali, Governor Sindh Ishrat-ul-Ibaad, Chief Minsiter Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Faisal Saleh Hayat, Raja Riaz Hussain, members of MQM’s Rabta committee and other politicians strongly condemned this coward act.
