Over 800 guests, including an official delegation from Pakistan led by Federal Minister for Population Welfare Firdous Ashiq Awan, attended the gala reception hosted by Indian tennis star Sania Mirza and cricketer Shoaib Malik who entered into a wedlock on April 12. The guests, who attended the reception at the five star Taj Krishna hotel, included many VVIPs from all over the country and also across the border, including former team-mate Sohail Tanveer, singer Waris Baig. The Pakistani delegation presented a golden crown to Sania. The evening function at Taj Krishna was off to a quiet start with the first one to enter the venue being Shoaib Malik's mother Sultana. “I am very happy. We were all eagerly waiting for this evening. Insha Allah, we will have a grand function in Sialkot on April 17.”
Pakistan cricketer Tanvir Sohail, perhaps, reflected the mood of the Pakistan cricketers themselves. “I am representing the Pakistan cricketing fraternity here. It feels great to be in India and especially in Hyderabad for this august occasion. The best part is we are taking our ‘bhabhi' [Sania] back home.” Telugu Desam Party President and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and other prominent personalities from the tollywood including actor Nagarjuna also made their presence. Ever since the announcement of the wedding, both the leading sportspersons of South Asia were involved in series of controversies with rugard to Shoaib's first wife Ayesha Siddiqui.
