The provincial metropolis finally got the chance to be a part of the cross-border celebrations as the Walima of Shoaib Malik and Sania Mirza was held at a local hotel on Tuesday in the presence of Lahore’s elite amid strict security. The Pakistani groom, donning a black suit, had a million dollar smile on his face while the Indian tennis ace seemed to be adapting quite well since landing in Pakistan. Sportsmen, politicians, showbiz personalities, businessmen and other influential people made up the guest list at the event at the Pearl Continental Hotel. Thousands of roses were used for decorating the Crystal Hall, arguably making it one of the grandest wedding receptions ever witnessed by the city. The glamorous evening passed off without any unpleasant incident and the families of the newlyweds seemed satisfied with the Walima arrangements. However, the couple seemed ‘annoyed’ at the least by the overcrowding at their reception. In complete observance of government policy, the guests were treated only to a one-dish menu and the event ended on the scheduled time of 10pm. Hundreds of policemen were deployed in and around the hotel while plainclothes policemen had also been deputed at the function, which hosted around 1,000 guests. Traffic wardens were specially stationed at The Mall to maintain the smooth flow of traffic, although they were still unable to prevent a temporary jam at around 9pm. Notable guests at the Walima included Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer, Federal Minister for Population Welfare Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan, the prime minister’s son Qadir Gillani and a number of people from the world of showbiz.
