* Say entire responsibility of BB’s murder rests with Musharraf, Elahi, ex-IB chief

Police high-ups removed security from the main gate of Liaquat Bagh on December 27, 2007 after an argument with Benazir Bhutto’s political secretary Naheed Khan and her husband Safdar Abbasi. According to the prescribed security plan, Benazir had to leave from the Gawalmandi side, but her vehicle was turned towards Murree Road as police vehicles had blocked the way – seemingly a deliberate move.

This was revealed by leaders of the People’s Students Federation in their statements recorded at the FIA office by its joint investigation team.

PSF Divisional President Ayaz Pappu and Punjab Deputy Secretary General Syed Sagheer Shah recorded their statements in the presence of FIA Director and in-charge of the investigation team, Khalid Qureshi, and Assistant Director Asghar Jatoi.

Ayaz and Sagheer said neither they knew the 60 people surrounding Benazir’s vehicle nor the party workers had seen them earlier.

“During the public meeting, a minor conflict occurred between police officials and Naheed Khan and Safdar Abbasi. CIA SP Rana Shahid and DSP Ishtiaq Shah asked Naheed to dismount extra people from the stage, to which Safdar said there were only party workers on the stage. On this, Rana Shahid told Naheed if she wanted to run the security affairs her way, then there was no need of police security. The PPP leaders should make their own security arrangements.”

After the argument, they said, Shahid ordered Ishtiaq to remove the police force, leaving the main gate of Liaquat Bagh without any security.

According to them, the responsibility of the incident rests with former president Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf, ex-Punjab CM Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi and former IB chief Ijaz Shah.
