The Council of Common Interests (CCI) Sunday unanimously approved the construction of Diamer-Bhasha Dam, paving the way for its funding by the international donors.
The dam having water storage capacity of 6.4 MAF would produce 4,500 MW of electricity and would pay back its construction cost within eight years after its completion in 2019.
Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani who chaired the meeting of the CCI at Prime Minister’s House said that the passage of the resolution with voice vote reflected the Government policy of national consensus and it would have a positive bearing on the future progress and prosperity of the country.
The Prime Minister gave special directions to the Ministry of Water & Power to develop a scheme for infrastructure development to support the early completion of Thar Coal Project. He further directed the Ministry of Railways to give a detailed briefing to turn Railways into a viable entity. The Premier also directed the Statistics Division for a briefing on Population Census in the next meeting of the CCI.
The CCI, which met for the first time after the passage of the 18th Amendment Bill, took up five agenda items in which rules and procedures for the newly constituted CCI were passed. According to the Constitution, the CCI was required to meet within the prescribed timeframe of 90 days after the enactment of the 18th Amendment Bill.
